New Jodi Picoult and P.D. James books to gobble up

I know there are legions of Jodi Picoult fans out there, and I'm excited to tell you that she has a new book coming out at the end of February. It's called Lone Wolf and it's about an estranged son who has to decide whether or not to terminate his comatose father's life support.

I didn't know that P.D. James is a Jane Austen fan. Her latest book, Death Comes to Pemberley, is a mystery set six years after Pride and Prejudice. Wickham is the victim!

An homage to scrapbooking, The Scrapbook of Frankie Pratt by Caroline Preston tells the story of young aspiring writer/flapper through a collection of more than 600 pieces of 1920s memorabilia.

In January, you can delve into Joshaua Jackson's A Grown-Up Kind of Pretty, a book about a line of Southern women who each had their daughters at 15. The current 15 year old is getting anxious, but then the long-buried body of a baby is found in the back yard, the baby her mother actually gave birth to 15 years ago.

Watergate, an adventurous dog, the next Hunger Games and vampires

Which books are special in my last order? A fictional book about Watergate by Thomas Mallon (apropriately called Watergate). Library Journal says the funny historical novel stars "a cast of clowns and self-serving creeps who make the familiar story a veritable opera buffa."

If you liked The Hunger Games, put a reserve on Pure by Julianna Baggott. In this postapocalyptic world an event called the "Detonations" left the survivors scarred, burned and required at 16 to become soldiers, or live targets if they're too damaged to serve. Some, called Pures, were safe inside the "Dome" during the disaster. One of the Pures finds out that his mother might be still alive outside the Dome and goes to look for her.

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey is a "fairy tale with an edge." In 1920, a childless couple homesteading in Alaska creates a child out of snow. In the morning the snow child is gone, but a blonde-haired girl appears in the woods and they begin to love her as a daughter. The publicist for this novel said "Ivey's work is why we all in our various ways go into this book business."
Watergate, Pure and The Snow Child will be released in February.

In the Sci-Fi novel The Revisionists by Thomas Mullen, a Department of Historical Integrity agent has to stop "historical agitators" (or hags) from trying to prevent the world's great disasters from occuring. How can their society have their "perfect" present if they can't learn lessons from horrific mistakes in the past? (To me this book sounds like the opposite of the premise in Isaac Asimov's The End of Eternity.)

A book for dog lovers, Roam: A Novel with Music by Alan Lazar is writen from the point of view of Nelson, a half-beagle, half poodle mix, who goes on an Incredible Journey type of adventure back to his "Great Love," his owner. It's "a touching page-turner" says Publisher's Weekly.

The third book in Guillermo del Toro's "The Strain" vampire invasion series, The Night Eternal, comes out just in time for Halloween.

PSU defensive lineman and later four-time Super Bowl winner Matt Millen
relates lessons he learned from Joe Paterno; All-American offensive tackle Dave Joyner lists five reasons why Paterno’s “Grand Experiment” of combining good football with good students has worked; and football team physician Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli supplies his list (painful reading) of top eleven comebacks from injuries sustained in PSU
football, basketball, fencing, swimming, gymnastics, and soccer.

Lydell Mitchell reminisces about his three Nittany Lion seasons with Franco Harris, a pairing that surely was made in some football heaven. Joe Bastardi, first a PSU wrestler and then a noted meteorologist, contributes a very funny list of the top ten (plus one honorable mention) “memorable weather games.”

Well-thumbed and debatable parts of the book will surely include the list of “Most Memorable Calls,” by Steve Jones, the longtime play-by-play “voice of Penn State sports”; the “Greatest Quarterback Controversies” section; and probably even the lists of best pizzas, bars, and Creamery ice cream flavors.

The book is divided into sections of no more than three or four pages each, perfect for quick reads, but likely to turn into extended reading because the content is so much fun, interesting to anyone who knows and loves Penn State in general, not just its sports in particular.

Penn State fans will give copies to one another as gifts, always a comical situation, but useful in this instance, as each will have one to refer to when the squabble begins over which was the most thrilling ending, the most heartbreaking loss, the best bowl victory.

Think about a copy for the young fans in your circle, too – it’s exactly the type of book that will lure a self-described non-reader into devouring it, word for word. The material is interesting and often funny, and it’s well-written but not pedantic (no mistaking it for a school text). Plus, for Centre County kids, it has the great appeal of being local history!

The Other by Thomas Tryon. A classic creepy tale of twin boys. Full of suspense and a shocking twist. It will stay with you long after you've read it.

It by Stephen King. (Available as an ebook.) The clown in the storm drain is the stuff that nightmares are made of!

The Blackstone Chronicles by John Saul. When an abandoned asylum is set to be demolished, the residents of the town start receiving mysterious gifts that bring about EVIL to the recipients.

For a truly haunting experience try Joe Hill's Heart Shaped Box. An aging rocker buys a dead man's suit. It turns out that the suit includes a ghost who plots revenge on him.

If you want to find out about the ghosts that are in your own backyard, try local author Jeffrey Frazier's The Black Ghost of Scotia or others of his Pennsylvania Fireside Tales.

I recommend Haunted by Joyce Carol Oates. Our late book reviewer volunteer, Sylvia Hopkins, wrote about it, "The 16 previously published stories herein range from the simply puzzling to the totally disgusting, and arranged in that sequence, lulling the reader into a slowly escalating state of horror. A stormy day like today reminds me of all the well-reviewed, weather-related fiction titles we’ve added to Schlow’s collection lately.

Fist, there’s Ordinary Thunderstorms by William Boyd, a thriller about a climatologist who goes to London to interview for a job and ends up as the main suspect for a murder he didn’t commit. He hides out in London’s underworld and loses everything, except for his cunning and determination, which he’ll need to fight against the conspiracy he gets pulled into. Library Journal decided Ordinary Thunderstorms is “Not just for thriller fans, this engaging blend of trickery, danger, and human eccentricity will appeal to readers who enjoy not only John Grisham but also John Irving.” Available now.

The Stormchasers by Jenna Blum is a “somber, effective portrait of twins—of the strength they gain and the harm they do to one another” according to Kirkus Reviews. Karena Jorge goes on a mission to find her long- lost, mentally-ill, storm-obsessed brother by traveling with a professional storm-chasing tour company. I like post-apocalyptic fiction. I am fascinated to read how people survive and cope when the world they knew crumbles away. While a lot of times these stories are set far in the future and have sci-fi elements to them, Zeitoun by Dave Eggers is a post-apocalyptic tale that’s true. Set in New Orleans during the time of Hurricane Katrina, Zeitoun lets you experience the flooding and complete wreckage of the city, the implementation of a military state, the confusion and fear. While his family flees the city before the storm, Abdulrahman Zeitoun, a Syrian-American landlord with a painting and contacting business, decides to stay behind to look after his properties and work-sites. He weathers the hurricane in his home, and then the flood water arrives. After moving everything of value he can to the second floor of his house, Zeitoun starts to journey out into the newly water-filled city in his old canoe. He rescues neighbors, feeds stranded dogs, and finds some of his friends. There is a working phone in one of his rental properties and he calls his anxious wife faithfully every day at noon. Then one day he stops calling; he has disappeared. What happened to Zeitoun is a suspenseful story of injustice and the breakdown of society in a time of crisis. Zeitoun was also the top nonfiction book on the 2009 Megalist of Best Books of the Year.

The Six-Liter Club by Harry Kraus

Written by a surgeon, this medical drama features the Medical College of Virginia's first black female trauma surgeon, Dr. Camille Weller. On her first day, she saves a patient who has lost six liters of blood and thus enters the elite group of surgeons who have managed this feat. However, her rising star hits the ceiling as she breaks the established rules, faces discrimination and has to deal with horrific memories of her childhood in the Congo. Publishers Weekly says "Kraus's story clips along at a fast pace, and his readers will appreciate how candidly the surgeon writer portrays the real world of operating rooms and their attending staffs."

When Auda is born an albino in medieval France, her nurse believes she will be susceptible to influence by the devil and has her tongue cut out to prevent her from spreading his lies. Auda's father is a papermaker, an up and coming profession as paper begins to replace parchment as a medium for the written word. Auda becomes her father's assistant, learns to read, and becomes a scribe for the local nobility and finds romance. She even begins to express herself through poetry. However, her independent spirit gets her in trouble with the Inquisition.

Self-absorbed and neurotic Kevin Quinn flies to Austin for a job interview during a terrorism scare. He sits next to a beautiful woman who reminds him of a long lost love. He decides to spend the day following the woman around and in the meantime obsesses about past relationships. Kevin might come across as unlikeable but his rants about academic politics and air disasters are "wickedly funny" according to Booklist. And then, wait until the end! Publishers Weekly wrote "The final 50 pages are unlike anything in the recent literature of our response to terrorism, a tour-de-force of people ennobled in the face of random horror."

If you’re waiting in limbo for the next Kim Harrison or Patricia Briggs novel, consider passing the time with the debut urban fantasy/paranormal romance book Spellbent by Lucy A. Snyder. Be advised that this is not a conventional entry in either category, and is not for the squeamish.

Shotgun slung across her shoulder, apprentice sorceress Jessie Shimmer finds herself stuck with a ferret for a familiar and on the bad side of the local VIP. The well-paced plot takes off 20 pages in with the disappearance of her mentor and love interest, leaving Jessie and the ferret alone to deal with a dragon and a demon. The gritty, no-holds-barred storytelling features some vicious scenes, a few completely off-the-wall events, and a plethora of Jessie's colorfully sarcastic outbursts.

To make up for her rash speech, Jessie tries to consider the consequences of her actions beforehand. She's rarely had it easy, and hates the idea of causing trouble for innocent people. By the end, you'll want to know more about her pariah parents, what lies hidden in her past, and what else Jessie's going to do to merit the book's ominous prologue.

Jeremy Love has tackled the tough subject of racial discrimination in the south during the 1930's incorporating an unusual blend of history, folklore and horror that makes for a heartbreaking, but visually captivating piece.
